Description of incident

Sand mining activities destroyed aprox. 520ha of hillslope seepage and valley bottom wetlands east of Soshanguwe. Although a few small scale operators are also likely responsible, large scale operators with excavators and large trucks are sand mining at commercial scale. Within the surrounding 1000km2 there seems to be only 2 - 3 representative hillslope seepages left. These hillslope seepages represent a rather unique wetland type being dominated by woody species, Spirostachys africana (Tamboti), which support the Moretele floodplain complex to the north.
