Dear Society members

It has been a while since my first communication with you all last December, and much has happened. Another World Wetland Day has flown past. The theme this year is Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction. I encourage members to please post photos and news of their events on the Wetland Portal (go to www.forum.sawetlands.org – you do need to register) and post away! This year, the Society was represented by your Chair at the ARC/IMCG wetland workshop on the 10th February (we also celebrated Women in Science with an all-female line-up of presenters).

Some important news …
CPD Points
For those registered with SACNASP, the good news is that we have now registered the SA Wetland Society on the SACNASP online CPD system, and we will be commencing soon with registration (through the Society) of endorsed wetland courses and events, so our members will be well placed to start collecting points.
From the 1st April 2017, you will need to accrue a minimum of 25 points over a 5-year cycle (minimum of 3 points in any one year). A minimum of 5 of these must be from Category 1. BY BEING A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY, YOU AUTOMATICALLY QUALIFY FOR 1 POINT EACH YEAR (in Category 3)!! So pay your fees (renewals coming soon …) and get others to join.
Before April, SACNASP will be launching a similar system for individuals, where you will be able to register yourselves and your point-worthy activities. Just a reminder, the categories are:
Category 1: Developmental Activities – such as
• Conferences
• Congresses
• Large group workshops
• Lectures
• Seminars
• Refresher courses
• Symposiums
Category 2: Work-based Activities: this is time-based and includes your usual work activities or in-house training, as well as mentoring of candidates.
Category 3: Individual Activities – such as
• Membership of a Voluntary Association (such as the SA Wetland Society)
• Membership of Society Board
• Membership of Provincial Forum committees
• Lecturing (even part-time or ad-hoc)
• Supervision of students
• Publication of papers
• Presentations at conferences etc
• Recipient of Wetland Award

Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS)
We congratulate Fred Ellery (one of our founding members) in becoming the International Chapter President of SWS, representing our corner of the continent in the international arena! We look forward to some strong interactions between the two societies.
